The Project
A local BBQ dive just a block from our design studio used to tease us all morning as they smoked amazing ribs and pulled pork. We loved eating their food, but their logo and branding were painfully out of date. So, we did a trade-out! Food for art! We got free food, and in exchange we helped them up their image via a new logo, sauce bottles, and poster art.
The Challenge
Hog Heaven was a delightful little shack. Not elegant, not fancy, just good. They needed to stay true to themselves—crusty, spicy, down-home, simple, and accessible. Even though they were getting national attention on Food Network, they wanted to keep their street creds as a true blue collar dive.
The Solution
We helped them develop a charming vintage pig logo. We created poster art and BBQ sauce labels that played up their theme of a barnyard brawl with Kickin’ Chicken, Punchin’ Pig, and Bashin’ Bull cartoon characters. Hog Heaven got a graphic makeover, and we got a gift card that would let us eat free BBQ for a couple of years!
Concepts
We drew lots of funny cartoon animals and eventually settled on a low-rent amateur wrestling poster vibe.
Labels
The three different sauces were ideal for chicken, pork and beef. We played with subtle color cues to set each label apart and to hint at the differing levels of heat in the spices.
Posters
Hog Heaven used the poster art to decorate the rib shack and to sell as merchandise. We still sell these posters in our Spirit of Nashville collection on our retail poster site.
We are very happy with the new logo and label illustrations that Anderson Design Group created for Hog Heaven. They were very easy to work with and listened to our ideas. We told them what we wanted and they delivered. They designed the labels for our BBQ Fight Club Sauce line….the label design persuaded Williams Sonoma to pick our sauces over many other nation-wide candidates.”
