  • Mère Bulles
    Mère Bulles
    POSTER ILLUSTRATION

This art was rendered by Aaron Johnson who, as an art student, spent time studying his favorite poster artist Alphonse Mucha. It was a dream project to be able to create an original illustrated poster using the same Art Nouveau approach. The resulting design is so authentic-looking that people incorrectly assume the poster is adapted from an actual Mucha design. (See the full design in our Poster section!)

    Macys Flower Show
    POSTER ILLUSTRATION

Macy's contacted us to create a series of posters to set the theme for their annual flower show. 2016's theme was "America the Beautiful," and featured the 6 main regions of the US and the flowers from each region.

    POSTER ILLUSTRATION

The main poster featured the Liberty torch , which was to be their centerpiece, and an array that showed off the 6 main regions of the United States. We also had to create a lettering treatment that could exist as a separate logo for signage.

    POSTER ILLUSTRATION

These posters were part of a series that expanded on the 6 regions from the main poster and turned them into their own full scenes. They were used to identify the sections at the event, which were broken up by the flowers that came from each region.

     MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATION

Parade Magazine hired us to create a cover illustration and type treatment for an article about fears in 2015. We used a retro comic book style reminiscent of the old B horror movies, which helped give it just the right tone.

    RESTAURANT BRANDING ART

This batch of art was part of our early exploration in the brend development process. It was very colorful—too colorful for selling food! So eventually, the Music City Pizza color palette was simplified to be just black and gold.

    RESTAURANT BRANDING ART

Once we settled on 2 colors for the Music City Pizza braning art, we created a set of grungy, energetic art panels that would become the menu (which was housed in a custom-printed double disc LP record!)

    PLAYING CARDS

We created these illustrations for Ellusionist Playing Card Company. The trick was to create a series of characters that all fit within the 60s era Madison Avenue look, but each had a unique personality. The client added their own colors and textures to the final design but here's our original illustrations.

    Nashville Scene
    MAGAZINE COVER & INTERIOR ART

The Nashville Scene is a weekly publication that locals look to for news and reviews. Every year, readers vote to nominate their favorite local businesses, arts, and entertainment venues. And each year, the Best Of Nashville issue is by far the most widely read. They were looking for a classic Art Deco vibe, so they hired us to create the cover and interior illustrations.

    Lane Motor Museum
This modern take on classic Monaco racing posters was made to show off the vintage style of Lane  Motor Museums iconic European cars. Taking cues from the deco style of the time period and incorporating autobody parts into the design we feel we made something that's both eye-catching and a fast read.

    “Burning Bush” and “She Tree”
    5" x 7" Scratchboard

Joel started experimenting with drawing trees, giving them personalities, human-like gestures, with the ability to communicate on an emotional level. Here are a couple of the early illustrations in the series which has grown to feature more than 12 works.

    “Wind Blown”
    8" x 10" Scratchboard

Scratch board demands decisiveness. There is no erasing or undoing a mistake. Each tiny scratch on the delicate black surface reveals white, creating stark contrasts and bold positive and negative shapes. Note the details in the enlargement.

    Talking Tree Series
“Tree of Love” and “Crow’s Perch”
    5" x 7" Scratchboard

Each tree evolves almost organically from the roots up. The finished art will sort of go where it wants to—one scratch at a time. The roots become a trunk, the trunk become branches, and the branches become twigs, guided by the artist’s hand.
